speak life
I am constantly telling my children
You are beautiful.
You are amazing.
You are so smart!
You are funny, seriously.
You are my favorite.
It's what I do. I'm a builder.
I'm also a wrecking ball on bad days. Don't get me wrong. This mama's a hot mess on the verge of collapse a good percentage of the time. And yet, I'm a builder.
Kids are funny. You know what they say in response to my building? Yes, you DO know. Remember when your mom would say, "You look very nice, sweetie." You thought, "You don't really mean it, you HAVE to say that. You're my mom." And that's exactly what my kids say to me.
I started to pull back from complimenting them because of it. I figured if they didn't want to hear it, I didn't want to say it too much. However, the mercy of God has enabled me have a glimpse of how He sees me. God took the time to cut a design, specific to me, with perfection. I look at me and see flaws. But my Creator, my Designer, the One that took precious care to knit me together, every piece and part, sees beauty. He's my father; that's how He sees me. It doesn't negate the truth in His perspective of me just because of who He is. And THAT is also true of them. They are what I say they are, I'm not just saying it because I have to.
It occurred to me that people across the globe are who they are because of what their parents said to them as children. When the world is screaming, "You're amazing! You're beautiful! You're hilarious! You're a star!!" People are taking their own lives because their fathers told them they were worthless, and that's the only voice they heard in adulthood.
It's crazy, right? You get what I'm saying?
Speak life. You've seen that quote floating around Facebook that says, "What you say to your child becomes their inner voice." Speak life to your children and give them flight!
