signs

A few months ago, one of the boys in our neighborhood broke the silence on our street with a roaring dune buggy. He raced up and down the street for about half an hour a few times a day until the gas ran out, and the roaring would cease. After about a week, my son came home with a dirt bike in his trunk, fully loaded with a roaring engine of its own.

In 11 years of living in our neighborhood, there has never been a sign at the entrance to the churchyard. As a matter fact, most of the pastors that have lived in the parsonage next door, have made a point to give us access to the playground even though we aren’t members of the church.

I’m not saying the sign was not warranted. We have had to discourage our resident drivers from driving though the churchyard on more than one occasion. It just makes me laugh because it reminds me of one of my favorite childhood books, The Poky Little Puppy.

Sometimes we just need someone to state the obvious by way of a signpost. It flags our attention. Sometimes it ruffles our feathers. Sometimes we just need to remember.

Don’t dismiss it, darlings. The more you ignore the signposts in your life, the easier it is to drift. Go back to church. Call the friend. Mail the letter. Say the words. Don’t let the signposts crumble under your  ambivalence.

“If you seek <wisdom> as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭2:4-5‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

  1. Hahaha I love The Poky Little Puppy and yes wouldn't it be wonderful if dogs could heed the signposts. But first we need to acknowledge and heed the signposts in our lives.
