perfection

They are born to us, perfect by our own definition. Tiny and frail and beautiful. We think our hearts might burst with the magnitude of love we feel when we look at their perfect faces. ⁣

As they grow they ask for space, privacy, freedom. We oblige if we can, still steering, but with grace.⁣

At some point the door swings open, and they go out into their own real lives, and it’s too soon. And it hurts. We want so badly to steer them away from the pitfalls, and they hate us if we try. ⁣

We love them with an open hand, allowing for their path to take its own turns. And it wrecks us. Because we love them so much, their perfect little faces, and the breaking away, although it is necessary, it is painful⁣

“Your lovingkindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; Your judgments are like a great deep. O LORD, You preserve man and beast. How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.”
